Why Sales Tax Does Not Vary Locally in D.C.

Washington, D.C. is a single sales tax jurisdiction with no county governments, city tax districts, parish rates, borough rates, or local option add-ons. A normal taxable item in Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, Downtown, Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan, Petworth, Anacostia, Tenleytown, Foggy Bottom, and Southwest Waterfront uses the same general rate. The variation comes from what is being sold, not where in the District it is sold.

Marketplace facilitators must collect on behalf of marketplace sellers for taxable marketplace transactions.

D.C. Food, Grocery, Restaurant, and Soft Drink Notes

Food sold for home preparation or consumption is generally exempt when sold in the same form, quantities, and packaging as food commonly sold in grocery-type stores. D.C. Digital Goods, Software, SaaS, and Data Processing Notes

SaaS and cloud software should generally be treated as taxable.

Common D.C. Sales Tax Mistakes

  • Saying D.C. has local city or county sales tax rates.
  • Creating fake rates for Georgetown, Capitol Hill, or other neighborhoods.
  • Saying every D.C. sale is 6%.
  • Forgetting the general rate increases to 7% on October 1, 2026.
  • Applying the general rate to restaurant meals instead of 10%.
  • Applying the general rate to hotel rooms instead of 15.95%.
  • Applying the general rate to commercial parking instead of 18%.
  • Forgetting soft drinks have an 8% rate.
  • Forgetting off-premises alcohol has a 10.25% rate.
  • Treating SaaS as exempt because there is no physical software delivery.
  • Ignoring data processing and information service taxability.
  • Missing the $100,000 or 200-transaction remote seller threshold.
  • Forgetting use tax on untaxed online, software, or service purchases.
  • Hard-coding the 6% rate without a scheduled Oct 1, 2026 update.

Washington D.C. Sales Tax Compliance Guide for Businesses

Businesses collecting sales tax in Washington D.C. must file regular returns and remit collected tax to the DC Office of Tax and Revenue. Filing frequency depends on your sales volume — typically monthly for high-volume sellers, quarterly for mid-range, and annually for low-volume filers.

Returns are generally due on the 20th of the month following the reporting period. Late filings accrue penalties (typically 5% per month up to 25%) plus interest on unpaid tax. Most states require electronic filing (e-file) once your tax liability exceeds a threshold.

Keep detailed records of all sales, tax collected, exemption certificates, and filed returns for at least 4 years (longer in some states). The DC Office of Tax and Revenue may audit your sales tax records — maintaining organized records reduces audit risk and simplifies the response process.

For multi-state sellers, use our Multi-State Sales Tax Calculator to estimate obligations across jurisdictions, or the Sales Tax Reconciliation Calculator to match collected tax to filing amounts.
