Terms of Service
Last updated: 2026-09-11
These terms cover what TaxesLedger offers, what it deliberately does not offer, and what you agree to by using it. They are written to be read rather than skipped, so the parts that actually constrain you — the limits on the results, the embed attribution, and the liability position — are stated plainly instead of buried.
1. What this site is
TaxesLedger publishes free sales tax, GST/HST and VAT calculators and the reference pages that go with them. Using the site means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, the remedy is simply not to use it — there is no account to close and nothing to cancel.
2. This is not tax advice, and that is not boilerplate
Every figure the site produces is an estimate generated from a stored rate and the numbers you type. It is not advice, and no relationship of professional responsibility is created by using a calculator here. That distinction has practical content: a calculator does not know whether your particular supply is taxable, exempt or zero-rated, whether a reduced rate or point-of-sale rebate applies to it, which jurisdiction has the right to tax it, or whether you have an obligation to register at all. Those questions decide most real tax outcomes, and none of them can be answered from a rate.
Before you file a return, invoice a customer, or make any decision with money attached, verify the figure with the relevant authority — your state Department of Revenue, the Canada Revenue Agency, HMRC, or the equivalent — or with a credentialed professional. The editorial policy sets out who writes this site and what they are and are not qualified to tell you. The disclaimer collects these limits on one page.
3. Rates change, and this site can lag
Rates are compiled from official sources and reviewed on a schedule described on the tax data sources page. They still go out of date. A council can change a municipal levy with weeks of notice, a state rate can move on a date set years in advance, and special-district, reduced and local rates are not all represented here. Where we know a change is coming, pages say so in advance; where we have not caught one yet, the page will be wrong until we do.
You are responsible for verifying any rate you rely on in a production filing. If you find one that is wrong, please tell us through the contact page — the corrections policy explains how we handle it.
4. Acceptable use
You may use the calculators freely, for personal or commercial purposes. Please do not:
- scrape, crawl at volume, or bulk-extract the site's content or rate tables — if you want the data, the licensed dataset below exists precisely so you do not have to;
- attempt to disrupt, overload, probe or gain unauthorised access to the site or the infrastructure behind it;
- republish the site's written content as your own, or present its output as professional tax advice from you or from us.
5. The rate dataset is openly licensed
The global rate table on global tax rates, including its downloadable CSV, is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. You may reuse those rates in articles, reports and tools, including commercially, provided you credit TaxesLedger with a link back to that page. That licence covers the rate data on that page — not the site's written guides, page copy or code.
6. Embedding a calculator
The embed code offered on the widget page is free to use on your own site. It carries a "Powered by TaxesLedger" line that links back to the calculator it came from. That link is the price of the widget: please do not remove it, hide it with CSS, or mark it nofollow. If you need an attribution-free or custom arrangement for a high-traffic placement, ask us through the contact page rather than stripping it.
7. Advertising
The site is ad-supported through Google AdSense, which serves advertisements automatically. Advertisers have no input into rates, rankings, guide content or which tools exist, and no page here is written to please one. How advertising cookies are handled is covered in the privacy policy.
8. Links to other sites
The site links out heavily to revenue authorities, statutes and municipal by-laws, because a claim about tax is worth little without the source it came from. Those sites are not ours: we do not control their content, availability or privacy practices, and a link is not an endorsement. Where an official page moves or disappears, the citation may break before we notice.
9. No warranty, and the limit of our liability
TaxesLedger is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied — including any implied warranty of accuracy, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. We do not warrant that the site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any figure it produces is correct for your situation.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive loss arising from use of the site or reliance on its results — including underpaid or overpaid tax, penalties, interest, or lost profit. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page changes when we do, and continued use of the site after that date is acceptance of the revision. We do not keep a public diff of past versions of this page; the editorial policy describes how substantive corrections to content are logged.
11. Contact
Questions about these terms, a rate you believe is wrong, or an embed arrangement all go to the same place: the contact page.
