About Alberta Sales Tax

Alberta has a 5% combined sales tax rate, consisting of the 5% federal GST and no provincial sales tax (GST only).

Alberta does not levy a provincial sales tax, making it a GST-only jurisdiction. Only the 5% federal GST applies to most goods and services. This is the simplest tax environment in Canada: one rate, one tax authority (CRA), and full ITC recovery. However, businesses selling into other provinces must still apply destination-based rates for those customers.

What Postal Code T0P Covers

T0P covers remote northeastern Alberta in the Wood Buffalo region around the Athabasca oil sands, including the fly-in community of Fort Chipewyan on Lake Athabasca plus Fort McKay, Anzac and Conklin. These are small First Nations, Métis and oil-sands communities surrounded by boreal wilderness. Population is very sparse and heavily tied to the energy industry.

Where T0P Sits — and What That Changes at the Till

T0P sits about 140 km north of Fort McMurray, the nearest centre of any size, and is the only postal area our data records for Fort Chipewyan / Fort McKay. The nearest other postal area in Alberta is T9K (Fort McMurray), some 140 km off — a fair measure of how much ground one code has to cover out here, and of why almost everything that is not bought locally arrives freight-forward. The zero in T0P is Canada Post's marker for a rural service area — every code in the T0 block is rural Alberta — which is why one prefix has to cover 5 separate settlements here rather than a few city blocks.

5 named communities share this one code — Fort Chipewyan and Fort McKay among them — which is the ordinary shape of rural Alberta: the postal geography is wide, the retail geography is narrow. General merchandise is bought in one or two service centres or ordered in, and an order shipped into T0P takes 5% however far the seller sits from Fort Chipewyan / Fort McKay. Around Athabasca oil sands, an unusually large share of local transactions are business-to-business, where GST is recovered as an input tax credit rather than borne as a cost. The figure on the invoice and the figure that actually lands on the buyer are not the same, and that gap is the most-misread line in industrial bookkeeping. Around Lake Athabasca / Wood Buffalo National Park, demand is seasonal, and seasonal demand is where the small-supplier threshold bites hardest: an operator who only trades in summer can cross $30,000 inside a single quarter and owes GST from the sale that took them over it, not from the following year.

The 5% above is set for the whole of Alberta and does not move between postal codes — T0P pays exactly what every other Alberta code pays. The bill that does move is an overnight one. Alberta's 6% tourism levy applies on top of GST, and has done at that rate since 1 April 2026, so a $200 room night inside T0P carries $12.00 of it. It was 4% before that. The base is wider than the room rate: booking, service and administration fees, pet charges, cleaning and even smoking-in-a-non-smoking-room penalties are inside it. It runs out at 28 nights: once the same guest has stayed that long continuously the booking stops being transient accommodation, and the levy stops with it.

Everything above is particular to T0P; the rules that are not — registration thresholds, filing frequency, input tax credit recovery, point-of-sale rebates — are set for the whole of Alberta, and they live on the Alberta sales tax guide rather than being restated on T0P's page, where the calculator above is already locked to 5%.

Selling into T0P: What You Need to Register For

Alberta runs a GST Only system administered by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), with a registration threshold of $30,000 (federal GST). Filing frequency, input tax credit recovery, point-of-sale rebates and the full registration walkthrough are set out on the Alberta sales tax guide — they are province-wide rules, identical for every postal code here, so this page links them rather than repeating them.

  1. Charge the rate the address decides. A delivery into T0P is an Alberta sale, so charge 5% GST — your own address does not enter into it.
  2. Show it the way Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) expects. The GST amount as its own line item.

Everything else about selling here — thresholds, filing frequency, ITC recovery, point-of-sale rebates, and the full province-by-province sourcing rules — is identical for every postal code in Alberta and is set out once on the Alberta sales tax guide and in the Alberta GST/HST calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions users ask.

What areas does postal code T0P cover?

The Forward Sortation Area T0P covers Fort Chipewyan, Fort McKay, Conklin, Anzac and Chard in the Northeastern Alberta (oil sands region) region of Alberta in a predominantly rural setting. Retail and civic landmarks inside the code include Athabasca oil sands and Lake Athabasca / Wood Buffalo National Park (nearby) — the places where purchases in T0P actually happen.

What is the sales tax rate for FSA T0P in Alberta?

The combined sales tax rate for postal code FSA T0P in Alberta is 5%. This is the 5% federal GST only — Alberta does not levy a provincial sales tax.

How do I calculate tax for a purchase in Alberta (FSA T0P)?

To calculate the total price including sales tax for any purchase in Alberta, multiply the purchase price by 1.5. For example, a $100.00 purchase costs $105.00 total, with $5.00 in sales tax.

For the reverse calculation, divide the total price by 1.5 to find the pre-tax amount. Run the example above backwards and $105.00 paid in Alberta resolves to $100.00 before tax and $5.00 of GST.

Does Alberta use HST or separate GST and PST?

Alberta uses a GST-only system. Only the 5% federal GST applies — there is no provincial sales tax.

What kind of area is T0P — urban, suburban or rural?

T0P is a predominantly rural code, within the Northeastern Alberta (oil sands region) region. Retail is concentrated in a few centres, so residents frequently buy online or drive to a larger town — both of which are still taxed at the same provincial rate, but delivery-based purchases follow the destination rule to this postal code.

Do local taxes in T0P change what I pay?

Not the sales tax itself — Alberta levies 5% province-wide and there is no municipal sales tax in Canada. What can differ by municipality are the separate levies that sit outside sales tax: accommodation and lodging taxes on short-term stays, and in some provinces local levies on prepared food or alcohol.

So a hotel folio or restaurant bill from Fort Chipewyan / Fort McKay can total more than 5% while a retail receipt from the same street does not. Check the municipality's own schedule for those, and see the Alberta sales tax guide for the province-wide rules.

How does FSA T0P map to a sales tax rate?

The Forward Sortation Area (FSA) is the first three characters of a Canadian postal code. T0P falls within the range assigned to Alberta. Canada sets sales tax provincially rather than municipally, so the FSA's job here is to place the buyer: once you know a delivery address sits in T0P, you know it is an Alberta sale and you charge 5%. That matters most for shipped orders, where the buyer's postal code — not your own — decides the rate.
